Ramanathapuram District, Tamil Nadu
Tucked into the southeastern corner of Tamil Nadu, between the Vaigai River and the Palk Strait, lies Ramanathapuram district — a land of ancient temples, farming communities, and salt-flat horizons that stretch to the sea.
It is not a place that makes the news often. It doesn't need to. The people who come from here carry it with them wherever they go.
Ponnakkaneri — The Golden City
Before Paramakudi, there is Ponnakkaneri.
The name means Golden City in Tamil — Pon (gold) + Kaneri (place of water). A small village near Paramakudi, it is my native. The kind of place where everyone knows everyone, where the rhythm of life follows the seasons, and where the land has been farmed by the same families for generations.
My family's roots run deep into this soil. My father grew up understanding the land not as property but as a relationship — something you tend, something that gives back, something that demands honesty and patience.
These are values I carry into every engineering engagement I take.
Paramakudi — The Town That Raised Me
From Ponnakkaneri, we settled in Paramakudi — the taluk headquarters of Ramanathapuram district.
Paramakudi sits on the banks of the Vaigai River, and is known for three things above all others:
- The Arulmigu Muthalamman Temple — one of the most revered goddess temples in the region, drawing devotees from across Tamil Nadu
- The Vaigai River — a lifeline for the region's agriculture, and the backdrop to every childhood memory I have of home
- Its Gundu Red Chilli — a small, round, intensely flavoured variety of chilli that is famous across India for its heat, colour, and aroma
A Region of Farmers
Ramanathapuram district has long been an agricultural heartland. The crops that define the region's economy are:
Gundu Milakai (Round Red Chilli) — the prized variety of chilli unique to this region. Rounder and hotter than the more common long chilli varieties, Gundu Milakai has a deep red colour that releases intensely into oil, making it essential in South Indian cooking.
Cotton — another major crop of the district. The black soil (karisaal mann) of Ramanathapuram holds moisture well and is ideal for cotton cultivation. Generations of families, including ours, have grown cotton alongside chilli.
Pearl Millet (Kambu), Groundnut, and Pulses — the supporting crops that fill the fields between seasons.
Farming here is not a backup plan. It is a livelihood, a tradition, and a source of pride that no software career can replace.
Our Family Business
My father manages ASK Chilli — a family enterprise built on the same values that have defined farming in Ramanathapuram for generations: quality, honesty, and relationship.
ASK Chilli sources and supplies premium Gundu Red Chilli directly from the farms of Paramakudi and surrounding villages. No intermediaries, no adulteration. Just the real thing — the chilli that Tamil Nadu's kitchens have depended on for centuries.
The business has grown beyond the region. ASK Chilli now supplies buyers across Tamil Nadu and beyond — but the product never changes. Same soil. Same variety. Same standards.
What Paramakudi Gave Me
People sometimes ask how a kid from a small farming town in Ramanathapuram ended up building cloud platforms and leading engineering teams.
The honest answer is that the skills are the same.
Farming teaches you that systems are interconnected — change one thing, everything adjusts. It teaches you that quality isn't optional — shortcuts in the field cost you at harvest. It teaches you patience — you plant, you wait, you tend, and eventually the work speaks.
Platform engineering is the same. You design, you build, you watch, you adjust. The time horizon is different. The stakes feel different. But the discipline is identical.
I am a technologist because of Paramakudi, not despite it.
